Bridgeworks

Bridgeworks (designed with Alan Davies and Bruce Carscadden)
This installation was commissioned through a juried open call for themed submissions from artists in British Columbia. Our submission, created in collaboration with Alan Davies and Bruce Carscadden, explored the nature of bridges and the multiple opportunities the idea of connection can manifest. Vancouver is a city that is characterized by land masses separated by bodies of water, therefore necessitating bridge connections. Unfortunately, most bridges reflect a banal pragmatism of essentially extending the roadway as connector, effectively erasing any deeper reflection of what this created interstitial space can be as a place in and of itself. This idea of a liminal space of contemplation and realization was the foundation for our installation. The installation, which featured a ramped promenade to sequentially engage three viewing machines, posited three alternative experiences of being suspended between two existing realities and immersed in an alternative third place. Each third place was constructed in an open-ended manner through the use of imagery, artifact, and reflection. The viewer is left to complete the alternate bridgeworks through their imagination into the possibilities of what bridging can be.
