Negotiated Space

Negotiated Space (designed with the marc boutin architectural collaborative) Negotiated Space was an invited installation to the exhibition Substance over Spectacle,  Belkin Art Gallery, Vancouver, BC, a nation-wide exploration of contemporary Canadian architecture curated by Andrew Gruft.. The thesis implicit in the title argues for the complexity and integrity of the best Canadian architecture, in an international context which often bestows the highest profile on buildings that tend toward the spectacular.

The contribution by MBAC, as an invited participant in the exhibition, explores the notion of negotiable space as a conceptual idea that activates passive users into actors within architectural and public landscapes. Within the context of the exhibition, this idea is catalyzed though the creation of three interactive structures that establish a spatial relationship within the gallery space and within which the viewer becomes an engaged participant within the meaning of the work. Each of the illuminating and projecting structures contain models and graphics depicting how negotiable space becomes represented in each project: the Ramsay Redevelopment project, Tag Advertising Studios, and the New Varscona Theatre.
